Medical Humanities

At Middlesex we encourage passion, humanism, and well-roundedness in our residents and faculty.

One path to accomplish this, as well as develop a greater sense of community and appreciation of the arts, has been a resident-run Medical Humanities seminar series. Residents, faculty, family, and community members come together to discuss pieces of literature over dinner and drinks. Readings are diverse in style and genre and include Edgar Allen Poe, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Karen Russell, and Flannery O’Connor. They touch on themes of trauma, conformity, uncertainty, and high stakes.

As attendance has grown seminars have moved out of the hospital and into the surrounding community. Recent venues have included parks, restaurants, a local vineyard, and an outdoor Shakespeare production.
