The son of missionaries, Dr. Paul grew up all over the world, relocating 24 times before settling in Connecticut for training. He pursued his deep passion for service to underserved populations through participation in a personalized track focusing on global and community health. He served as Chief Resident during his final year. After graduation he joined the United States Uniformed Public Health Service and entered full-time inpatient and outpatient practice at the Indian Health Service hospital in Lawton Oklahoma.
